July 7, 2007 : Blooming Basswood

This time of year one's nostrils can get hit with a soft, permeating fragrance that is difficult to pinpoint. I've sometimes wondered why my co-worker Lenny suddenly smells like a fashion model. These inconspicuous little blossoms are the answer: somewhere there is a basswood near.

Also called American Linden, Basswood are said produce the whitest honey available.

The other scent that often misleads me is that of a spruce tree. It hits my nose as the smell of a flower. I don't detect anything piney about the fragrance until I realize its source.

(names have been changed to protect the innocent.)
