June 13, 2007 : The Golf Cart

If there's one thing that'll get you fired around here it's hogging the golf cart. During the planting season I am shamelessly possessive of the thing, and little bothers me more than to walk outside and see that the cart is missing from where I parked it. I zoom around getting one more of this or of that, check on the guys over planting the impatiens bed, and cruise home for a glass of milk. Later in the season it will become a valuable vehicle for the old and crippled people that come to visit the gardens but can't make the hike to all the different flower beds. They don't understand that the thing shouldn't be driven too slowly and putt around until it starts to emit blue smoke.

We probably should have three golf carts on a place like this.

The high school kids are especially fond of the golf cart, and it takes the new guys awhile to learn the delicate matters of when it is appropriate to use. For example, when hauling pop and juice up from the basement to refill to cooler, one should not use the golf cart to carry it the twenty feet from the top of the stairs to the cooler.
