August 25, 2007 : Gold Edge Duranta

There is a nice section of the front bed that features yellow and blue flowers. The blue is mostly provided by Leilani Ageratum, pictured here.

The yellow flowers are a signet marigold, Lemon Gem. In other areas of the garden Paul's liberal application of ammonium sulphate (don't tell him I used 'liberal' the same sentence as his name) has made the signet marigolds grow lush and green with few blossoms. They are one of the only annuals that won't show their blooms under heavy fertilization. Another is Nasturtium. He must have only driven by this area with the spreader once or twice, because the Lemon Gem are blooming happily.

The plant with green and gold variegated leaves is called Gold Edge Duranta, a striking plant that I purchased at Honker Flats Greenhouse up north past Thief River Falls. When pulling a nearby weed I found out the hard way that it has sharp thorns!
